Universal English Academy offers TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification at our school in downtown Kona, Hawaii. This exciting program is your doorway to teaching English at locations around the world. Our classes are personal, professional, and meet or exceed all internationally accepted standards. Our one of a kind curriculum combines every precept of the internationally accepted CELTA course and also teaches the UEA method developed by Owner Matt Carter. This life changing course will give you the confidence to enter any ESL classroom in the world, create great rapport with your students, and be a positive addition to any school at which you choose to work. If you have ever dreamt of living overseas, travelling for an extended period or even a career as a teacher than this course is your stepping stone to a whole new lifestyle.
What a TEFL Course is...and What it is Not
There are two general scenarios for American second language teachers of English. The first is to teach foreigners who reside in the USA(ESL) and the second to teach non-native English speakers in their own country(TEFL). The demand for both is great but come with a different set of rules & requirements. Universal English Academy teaches TEFL with the primary aim being to find employment as a teacher overseas.
At the University level here in America you will need a Master's or Doctorate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) to be considered for employment. Public school systems require both degrees, teaching credentials and certain testing. As a private school teacher or teacher's aid many people can teach if they have a 4 year University degree and TEFL certification. With the proper know how you can teach privately in your community and find students through Criagslist or other forms of advertising.
In the second scenario demand for Native English Speaking Teachers (NEST) in foreign countries (China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Dubai, Middle East, Eastern Europe, Europe etc) is great and the the fact that you are a native speaker puts you in a position to really help your students improve. Yet just being a native speaker doesn't qualify you to be a NEST.
Until about 10 years ago most schools did not require TEFL certification as they would train you once you arrived. As long as you had a 4 year University degree in any subject you could qualify for a Specialist Visa and could legally teach in their country. This resulted in a lot of travellers, long-vacationers, and non-teachers seeking employment with no real desire to learn how to teach. The teachers showed up to class but their hearts weren't in their work. This resulted in an ever increasing desire on the part of English Schools around the world to have some measure of a teacher's basic knowledge and skill level.
Gradually TESOL professors developed a set of standards and systems that they could impart to non-teachers so that they knew from day one what they were doing and assure that students were actually following some semblance of a structured program. It also protected new teachers from being taken advantage of by unscrupulous schools by educating them in what they should expect, and what questions to ask before they signed a contract. This eventually blossomed into the TEFL Certification boom which has become in most cases a prerequisite to find serious employment as an English Teacher overseas.
When you present your TEFL Certificate to a prospective school you are saying three important things:
1. You have a basic understanding of How to Teach English.
2. You were serious enough about wanting to teach to get training.
3. You are not ignorant of international practises in TEFL and so
unscrupulous schools will avoid you.
In summary, TEFL Certification will prepare you to teach English anywhere in the world. It will put your resume above all others without certification, and will demonstrate your serious desire to enter the English teaching world. It will also protect you from ending up in a difficult situation you could have easily avoided.
TEFL Certification is not the end all however as most schools have their own system they will train you in and each teacher will over time develop their own unique style and approach. Each culture and location will present many challenges which can not possibly be covered in a TEFL course. In the end those challenges are what make living overseas an experience of a lifetime.
There is no internationally recognized governing agency that accredits TEFL programs, although many organizations are the self proclaimed leaders in the industry. There are a few Universities (U of Cambridge) that have excellent reputations for setting the standard in the industry but the fact is, most schools will accept TEFL certification based on the curriculum. (See below why our program is Universally accepted) They will ask you a few questions about where and how you learnt and will examine what you studied. In most situations they will be overjoyed with the training you received at UEA and put you at the top of their hire list.

Is the TEFL Lifestyle For Me?
There are many questions you will have to ask yourself before you decide if the life of an overseas English teacher is right for you. Undoubtedly the world is an amazing place with so much to see and many unique and exotic cultures and it is true that living overseas builds character, expands horizons and really allows you to discover many things about yourself that you might not have known. Yet it isn't for everyone. Can you cope with a language barrier and in some cases being completely illiterate? Can you try new foods and invest the time to put yourself in the shoes of another cultural perspective? Is country life or city life better for you? Can you feel safe and cared for outside of your comfort zone? What countries interest you and what laws and customs there might conflict with your own? Can you be away from your family for a year?
These and other questions will be explored in the TEFL class, but we encourage you to think carefully and deliberately about what it means to live in another country. Once you sign a contract you are legally bound to honor it.
UEA believes that the experience of overseas living is one of the best educations there is. That your commitment to be the best teacher you can be will pay big rewards in both friendships and experiences that you invite into your life. Our TEFL class will equip you with everything you need to truly be an asset to your school and students.
Job descriptions and salary vary by country and assignment but range from USD$1500 to USD$3500 per month for a work load of between 25 and 35 teaching hours. Many companies pay a full month's salary bonus upon completion of contract and will pay for RT airfare. Many schools pay for or subsidise housing costs and some schools even offer cars, bicycles, free language lessons, insurance, excursions and paid vacations. Most teachers find they have ample free time, and are able to see much of the country or surrounding countries. Outside of the United States and especially in Asia teachers are still well respected and prestigious members of society.
You can be expected to be paid in the country's currency and if you live frugally can save money quite easily as most expenses save food are covered by the school. It is possible to teach at a Jr. or Sr. high school or a conversation school where students come in all age groups from 2 to 80. There are cram schools, Jr. Colleges, trade schools, technical schools and so on where English is taught.
Most schools are supportive, will help you get settled and the vast majority of people who spend a year or so overseas return with amazing memories, new confidence, and an experience that is prized by many prospective employers.
Our Curriculum was developed by teacher Matt Carter with assistance and advice from ILTA panel members as well as input from English conversation school owners in 6 countries. The material in this course conforms to internationally recognized standards and exceeds them in most cases making our TEFL Certificate universally accepted at conversation schools around the world.
